DUSSEHRA - DURGA PUJA
Vijay Dashmi or Dussehra is a great festival of the Hindus. Usually it falls in the month of October. On this day Lord Rama defeated Ravana the king of Lanka. It marks the vistory of the good over the evil.

Lord Rama was the elder sond of king Dashratha of Ayodhya. Dashratha wanted to make Rama his successor, but his step-mother Kaikeyi wanted to make her son Bharath, the king of Ayodhya. So she compelled king Dashrathaa to send Rama on exile for fourteen years. Rama obeyed the will of his father and went to the forests. His brother Lakshman and his wife Sita also went with him.

They wandered in the forests for thirteen years. In the fourteenth year, Ravana, the king of Lanka stole away Sita to his palace in Rama's absence. Rama had tto fight Ravana. He raised an army in the forests. He fought against Ravana. Hanuman a great devotee of Rama helped him in his battle. The battle lasted for tren days. Ravana was defeated and killed in the battle. His son Meghnad and brother Kumbhkaran were also killed in the battle.

Dussehra is celebrated in the memory of Lord Rama's victory over Ravana. Ram Lila is held for some days before Dussehra. Jhankies from the life of Rama are taken out in a procession. On Dussehra day a big fair is held in an open ground. Old and young, women and children go to see the fair. Effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad are placed in the corner of the ground. Lots of crackers and fireworks are set in the effigies. In the evening, the effigies are set on fire. The children enjoy the fun when the effigies burn and the crackers burs.
